Prescribing rate of antibacterial drugs (age & sex standardised).

Rationale
This is an indicator of good practice. The control of resistance to antimicrobial drugs has been accepted as a priority by the Government and the UK Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy and Action Plan was published in mid-2000. It was developed from the Government’s response to a major enquiry and report from the HoL Sci and Tech Committee in the late 1990s, which reviewed the issue last year. The Committee plan to return to it in 2002 or 2003. The Specialist Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance (SACAR) is developing further proposals relating to surveillance of resistance and monitoring of antimicrobial use and the EU Commission is actively developing policy and actions relating to both areas. PPF Target 2002/3: During 2002/3 ensure all patients receive the clinically proven and cost effective drugs they need, taking full account of NICE appraisals of chemotherapy and smoking drugs and the views of individual patients about their treatments.
