Summary measure of Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data quality for NHS trusts with in-patient activity, including data on ethnicity.
Rationale
This indicator, which is currently based on Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data, provides a measure of the quality and reliability of the data underlying many of the Performance Indicators and serves as a proxy for assessing the general quality of data for each organisation. The Data Quality Indicator is being further developed to measure the accuracy of clinical coding from Trusts. For mental health services this indicator will be used to monitor and to ensure improvement of coverage and quality of data on ethnicity. The collection of ethnic group data for all inpatients was made mandatory in 1995 (EL(94)77).
