Missed outpatient appointments

Download table of results for all trusts (2.6MB)
Percentage of expected first consultant outpatients appointments for which patient did not attend (for Mental Health sector activity).

Rationale
This indicator shows the number of expected first outpatient appointments for which the patient did not attend as a percentage of all expected first outpatient appointments made. Outpatient "did not attends" (DNAs) are expensive for the NHS and mean that patients miss out on care. Outpatient DNA rates vary widely and there is evidence that they can be significantly reduced by reviewing appointment and other procedures from the perspective of the patients. A high level of missed appointments may indicate poor provision of community services. It can also be an indicator of inappropriate referrals and reflects the quality of the interface between primary care and secondary care.
