Level of 24 hour access to specialist mental health services

Level of 24 hour services provided in area i.e. people on the CPA can, when necessary, see a mental health professional and urgent referrals from primary health care teams can be seen by a mental health professional at any time 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Rationale
The mental health National Service Framework standard four states that ‘all mental health service users on the Care Programme Approach (CPA) should be able to access services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each service user who is assessed as requiring a period of care away from their home should have timely access to an appropriate hospital bed or alternative bed or place which is in the least restrictive environment consistent with the need to protect them and the public as close to home as possible’. By 2004 all people with a serious mental illness will be able to access a Crisis Resolution Team 24 hours a day.
