Generic prescribing

Download table of results for all trusts (2.6MB)
Number of generic prescription items as a percentage of all prescription items excluding those for dressings and appliances.

Rationale
This shows the percentage of items prescribed by the approved name, even when a generic product is not available. Generic products are generally cheaper than branded equivalents. Increasing the level of generic prescribing has been a long term Department of Health objective. PPF Target 2002/3: During 2002/3 ensure that all patients receive the clinically proven and cost effective drugs they need, taking full account of NICE appraisals of chemotherapy and smoking drugs and the views of individual patients about their treatments.
