Psychiatric readmissions (adults of working age)

Download table of results for all trusts (2.6MB)
Percentage of emergency psychiatric readmissions of patients (adults of working age), within a set period of discharge from the care of a psychiatrist.

Rationale
Although readmissions occur for a variety of reasons, a high emergency readmission rate may suggest that the level of mental health support provided in the community is inadequate. The indicator relates to the Mental Health National Service Framework standard 4: to ensure that each person with severe mental illness receives the range of mental health services they need; that crises are anticipated or prevented where possible; to ensure prompt and effective help if a crisis does occur; and timely access to an appropriate and safe mental health place or hospital bed, including a secure bed, as close to home as possible.
